The Leakey Foundation has announced its Francis H. Brown African Scholarship to support research and academic advancement in earth sciences and botany related to human origins by providing financial assistance to eligible East African scholars.

The purpose of the fund is to expand human knowledge and scientific interest in earth sciences and botany related to human origins while supporting research and strengthening capacity in these scientific fields within East African institutions and countries.

The funding amount offered under this scholarship is up to $30,000. The grant is strictly intended to cover research-related expenses essential to the project, including travel, fieldwork living costs, supplies, and other research expenses. It does not cover institutional overheads, salaries, benefits, or publication costs.

This scholarship is open to graduate students and post-PhD researchers of African heritage who are citizens of Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Uganda, South Sudan, Djibouti, Rwanda, Burundi, Somalia, or Eritrea. Applicants must either be pursuing a graduate degree at an accredited university or have completed their doctoral degree within the past ten years. They must also be engaged in research in earth sciences or botany related to human origins and demonstrate a commitment to continuing a career in research and teaching in their home country after completing their studies.
